Reflecting about the ethnography
In spite of the limited time available for developing the ethnographic field work, it is absolutely necessary that the researcher is able to map this capital available to the users and how this is being treated inside the digital inclusion practice which is taking place inside the telecentre.
The practices of the users will be observed both through their diaries and also in the physical presence of the researcher in the centre. The role of the researcher must allow a long presence inside the physical place, allowing for the users to get used to it.
The field diary will be where the researcher will take notes of the observed ocurrences, her impressions and thoughts during her stance in the feld.
Other kinds of documentation of the field experience might also be used, such as pictures and videos. In this process, it is essential that the actors feel comfortable and agree with the different methods.
In the case that we identify social networks in languages that can be read by the researcher, we will seek to become part of this network. It is important to reflect on the paths of how this can be achieved, keeping an ethical relationship with the field.
The participant observation can follow several paths. Bogdan explains that researchers have performed ethnographic work undercover, meaning that they did not present themselves as researchers in order to stablish a more equal relationship with the actors. In our case, our approach will be different. The researcher will present herself as such, but also seeking to acquire a role inside the telecentre. This could be both as a staff or voluteer or assuming other kinds of tasks.
